Stylish Speed

There are few things better than a great road ride. We’re not talking about your run-of-the-mill ride though.  We’re talking about that smooth, fast, gritting-your-teeth-with-a-smile-type of ride. The Aluboo R-Series is ready to pounce on those rides.

TEST REVIEWS: OUTSIDE MAGAZINE // BIKE MAGAZINE // BIKE RUMOR // ROAD BIKE ACTION

100 meters from the top of the first climb and your legs still feel fresh.  Thanks to the stiff-yet-supple Tam Vong bamboo inserts and aircraft-grade 6061 aluminum lugs the R-Series rides smooth and fast over the top.

The next test? The descent.  You crest the climb and feel your speed start to pick up. You plunge the turns, and it’s like the bike knows your line already.  Whoosh!  Truly beautiful is how the bamboo performs under torsional (twisting) forces, such as those produced by cornering the R-Series.

Why beautiful, you ask?  Because while it is incredibly stiff against bending, our bamboo actually has some give when under torsion. This unique ability of our bamboo to be both stiff AND forgiving at the same time makes for some of the smoothest and most forgiving cornering you’ve experienced on a bike.

R-Series: Smooth Even When the Road Isn’t

This next part of the ride just plain sucks.  It’s that flat section of bumpy county road with nothing to see except grass and piles of manure.  This washboard road had your old bike shaking out your fillings.

Looking down you see the asphalt disappear, and you brace for the shakes.  But instead of chattering, the rough road only mildly mumbles back at you.  You keep waiting for the really choppy part, all the way until the next section of smooth paved road.

What just happened?  The R-Series’ bamboo absorbed three times as many road vibrations as carbon fiber. The result? Much less fatigue to both you and the bike.  You can’t believe it, and you want to kiss the Aluboo as you hang it in the garage.  It wouldn’t be that weird, would it?

  1. Heidi

I was a Cat-2 racer and I loved the Aluboo. It’s very responsive, transferring a lot of power when sprinting. The absence of road vibrations permits the use of thin cotton bar tape, which is perfect for gripping the bars when climbing or sprinting. But most importantly, I’ve never bought a bike from people as responsive and generous as Ben C. and Nick. Thank you!!

  2. Brian Schaffer

I am so impressed with the Aluboo road bike that Jacob helped design for me that I felt the need to write a review. This bike is as advertised and more. I’ve been an avid cyclist for over 40 years. Most of my riding now is over rough urban pavement and I wanted a bike that would be fun and responsive without compromising comfort. This bike is noticeably smoother and just as responsive as my high end titanium and steel road bikes (cyclocross frames)! Additionally the frame is beautiful, even more attractive than the pictures from the website. Thank you Boo Bicycles for exceeding my expectations.

  3. Drew Haugen

I have done about 3,000 miles on my R1 so far this year, and couldn’t be happier with its performance. Smooth when cornering, stiff when sprinting and climbing, and handles nimbly.

The dampening of the bamboo is most noticeable on rough road surfaces, like washboard dirt roads. I compare it to the half-mute button on fancy TVs–you still feel the bumps, but the harshness is gone.

This bike is pleasure to ride.

    FULL DISCLOSURE–I work for Boo.
